Honors Essay 2
For this assignment, we wrote a piece of historical fiction that attempted to answer the question, “where are we going?” We chose an ethnic background for a fictional immigrant and wrote about their journey to Detroit and their response to the city (1890-1935). The main themes of the essays included immigration, Americanization, Detroit industry, urbanization, and issues of race and ethnicity. In this essay, we attempted to figure out what it meant to be “American” and where we, as Americans and Detroiters, were going as our characters grappled with the conflict of “stitching” themselves to the flag. My essay was inspired by my grandfather’s background, as his father, much like my character, was from Cork County, Ireland. I chose to include Essay 2 in my portfolio because I feel that it has been my best work in HON1000 thus far, and it represents a personal achievement as I have never done creative writing before. It has helped me develop as a writer, and it ties into my love of English. This essay has taught me more about my writing style, and it has even inspired me to take a creative writing course in the Winter 2015 term. You can view it here.

This service-learning project was completed in conjunction with my SOC2020 class, which dealt with contemporary social problems. It concerns youth involvement in the modern civil rights movement, and I worked with the Youth Civil Rights Academy.
